ESI (Employee State Insurance) is a comprehensive social security and medical insurance scheme administered by the Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). This self-financing program is designed to provide various benefits, including medical, retirement, unemployment, maternity, and disability benefits, to employees and their families. It ensures financial assistance during challenging times and contributes to the overall well-being of the workforce.
Under the 1948 ESI Act, establishments or factories with 10 or more employees earning up to Rs.15,000 per month must register with ESIC. The scheme's benefits are funded through contributions from both employees and employers, collected as premiums. Currently, employees contribute 1.75%, while employers contribute 4.75% of the salaries. Additionally, the state government contributes 1/8th share towards medical care expenses.
